2016 Olympics: Lyon women in numbers for the Rio Olympics
No fewer than 11 OL Women players have been called up to Philippe Bergeroo's squad for the Olympics' football tournament, which will run from 3 to 19 August in Brazil.
As expected, the champions of France and Europe will be strongly represented at the Olympic games in Brazil. At the end of the first training camp, which from 30 June had brought together 28 players in Ploufragan (Côte d’Armor), the Bleues' coach announced his 18-player squad (plus four reserves) for the Olympic tournament.
Without surprise OL Women will be particularly well represented in the competition that runs from 3 to 19 August; the list includes the club's two 'keepers, Sarah Bouhaddi and Méline Gérard; defenders Jessica Houara d’Hommeaux, Amel Majri, Griedge Mbock and Wendie Renard; midfielders Camille Abily, Kheira Hamraoui, Claire Lavogez and Élodie Thomis, and striker Eugénie Le Sommer. On top of that, OL's Kenza Dali is one of the four reserves.
Les Bleues will settle in to the National Football Centre (CNF) in Clairefontaine as of next Tuesday and will stay there until 25 July, playing two friendly matches, against China and Canada. A great way to prepare for a competition that will initially serve up Group G clashes with Colombia, New Zealand and women's football powerhouse the United States. The gold-medal match will be played on Friday, 19 August on the hallowed turf of the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.
